Soul Sister's 3rd Annual Funky Birthday Jam with Ivan Neville's Dumpstaphunk + DJ Soul Sister
Friday September 4, 2009 [10 PM ] DJ Soul Sister is the queen of the underground djs in New Orleans - a well-respected DJ artist, radio programmer, vinyl collector, party promoter and tastemaker not only in her native New Orleans, but worldwide. As host of her 14 year-running "Soul Power" show on WWOZ FM in New Orleans (and wwoz.org worldwide), and well-respected "right on party situations," Soul Sister stays true to the formats and music that she collects and loves - deep funk, rare groove, underground disco, D.C. go-go, boogaloo, Afro funk, groove jazz and old school hip hop. Recently and twice-voted "Best DJ in New Orleans" and highlighted in national magazines like URB, Spin and Wax Poetics, Soul Sister has thrown down her seamlessly blended funk/soul/rare groove/discotheque/jazz fusion/true school hip hop sets (vinyl only) in New York, Los Angeles and London, and for over a decade in New Orleans. Dubbed "the queen of rare groove" by one of her overseas "Soul Power" listeners, she has taken the nightlife by storm in her hometown, known more for its top notch live musicians than its top notch underground DJ scene. To her credit, Soul Sister's parties and DJ sets are now regarded and respected alongside those of her jazz, blues, rock, R&B & funk musician colleagues, many of them fans. She has also opened and been invited to open for a number of legendary acts, including George Clinton & P-Funk, Chuck Brown & the Soul Searchers, The Roots, Jurassic 5, Isaac Hayes and many more. And her sets add flavor to large-scale events ranging from New Orleans' Tales of the Cocktail to 2008 Essence Music Festival and Voodoo Music Experience.
