Louisiana Music Hall of Fame Induction Event:
Allen Toussaint, Ernie K-Doe and Benny Spellman Mother-In-Law Lounge, 1500 N. Claiborne Ave. New Orleans LA Sunday, August 2, 2009 8 - 11 p.m. (approximate) What better location to induct the late great Ernie K-Doe into the Louisiana Music Hall of Fame than the legendary Mother-in-Law Lounge named after his solid gold hit record? And while we’re at it, why not also honor the legendary songwriter, the guitarist and the man who sang the signature bass vocals in the recording? Allen Toussaint, author of “Mother-In-Law” and a recognized musical genius who has touched the careers of scores of artists over four decades, will be inducted into the LMHOF along with a posthumous induction of K-Doe. Also in attendance will be current LMHOF inductees Deacon John (who played guitar on the song) and Al “Carnival Time” Johnson. There will also be a video presentation of the recent induction of Benny Spellman, who gave us the original hits of Toussaint’s “Lipstick Traces” and “Fortune Teller” and who is unable to travel from Florida to attend. It was Spellman’s voice that provided the bass line “Mother-In-Law” recognized as the song’s “hook.” The event will be a celebration of the life of Ernie K-Doe shared by and with many of his surviving fellow musicians, friends and family. It is also a timely opportunity to honor and recognize the significant international influence and accomplishments of Allen Toussaint and his role as a key contributor to K-Doe’s success. An informal jam session involving many of the invited guests is anticipated, including Benny Spellman’s daughter Judy Spellman who will sing in his absence. Also being honored and participating will be Lenny Capello of “Cotton Candy” fame. An event commemorative “poster” done in the style of the heyday of K-Doe’s career is attached.
