The Tipsy Chicks
The Tipsy Chicks show Saturday, April 25 on the Lagniappe Stage may be their first performance at the New Orleans Jazz and Heritage Festival, but the members are certainly not strangers to the fest or the New Orleans music scene. Returning from a month long European tour to play their 11:20 am set, these women are all seasoned performers and recording artists who love and write about life in New Orleans. Singer, songwriter, guitarist, bassist and harmonica player Kim Carson is well-known in Louisiana, the gulf coast and Texas for her band the Casualties and for her own style of honky-tonk country music. Her compositions have been recorded by international artists and locally she has received several Offbeat awards. Kim brought these four women together after working with them all separately, to form this diverse and highly energetic band. Kim tours relentlessly and has 7 cd´s to her credit. Mississippi native Lynn Drury has been performing as a soloist and with her band in New Orleans for the last 12 years. Her sultry voice and the combination of Mississippi grit and New Orleans groove in her songwriting has enabled her to carve out her own musical niche. She has had 5 cd´s released under her name, including her newest one recorded live in Italy called “Dal Vivo”. She contributes many original songs, hard-driving guitar and lead and harmony vocals to this project. Pianist and vocalist Jan Clements is a New Orleans native and respected regular on Bourbon Street and around town. She was a founding member of Evangeline and the Instigators, and she performed in the award-winning 1993 Patsy Cline tribute. She has worked with many legendary New Orleans Blues and R & B artists, like Earl King, Mighty Sam McClean and Al ´Carnival Time` Johnson. Jan is currently a member of Grammy nominated Guitar Slim Jr´s band and is raising kids who are in the forefront of the next generation of New Orleans musicians. 5-string violin player Nancy Buchan was also a member of Evangeline and the Song Dogs, has been a session player on over 40 cd´s, including recordings by the Radiators, The Subdudes, Coco Robicheaux, Leslie Smith, Lenny McDaniels and others. Nancy currently lives in Costa Rica, where she performs with 2 Latin bands, a Blues band and with pianist Manuel Obregon. In November Nancy will be the only North American included in a 35 piece band called the Infinite River Orchesta, as they go down the Amazon River giving concerts and documenting the ecological problems. Nancy also writes a monthly column on music for a magazine in Costa Rica and is thrilled to be back in New Orleans playing with friends. |
