Thursday, February 26, 2009, 6 to 8 p.m. Johnaye Kendrick Johnaye Kendrick has been studying jazz since the age of 18. Her vocals recall Sara Vaughan and Dinah Washington, but interpreted in her own dynamic style. Not only is Johnaye an accomplished singer and violinist, she also has considerable writing and arranging skills. A San Diego native, she completed her secondary education at the School of Creative and Performing Arts where her focus was the violin. Johnaye relocated to Chicago to attend the Chicago College of Performing Arts at Roosevelt University before transferring to Western Michigan University, where she received a Bachelor of Music with emphasis in Jazz Studies in 2005. Now residing in New Orleans, studying at the Thelonious Monk Institute, Johnaye has had the privilege of studying with some of the greatest jazz masters in the world including Terrence Blanchard, Kurt Elling, Benny Golson, Nnenna Freelon, Danilo Perez, Lewis Nash, Jimmy Heath and Ron Carter.
